Three Churches, One History

Oslo Cathedral was previously known as Vår Frelsers Kirke (Church of Our Saviour) and was completed in 1697. However, the cathedral's history in Oslo extends over nine hundred years back to St. Hallvard's Cathedral and the medieval city of Oslo. No institution has a longer shared history with the city.
Altarpiece in Three Tiers

In keeping with the baroque style, the altarpiece in the cathedral is made in three tiers. At the bottom, we see Jesus celebrating the Passover meal with his disciples. In the middle, Jesus is on the cross with Mary and John on either side. At the top stands the victorious Christ surrounded by angels.
The Pulpit, Anno 1699

The pulpit was installed in the church two years after its consecration in 1697. Together with the altarpiece and the organ facade, it constitutes the cathedral's original baroque interior. These are the first examples in Norway of what is known as acanthus baroque and marked a breakthrough for this style in the country.
Baptismal Basin from 1656 and Baptismal Font from 1726

The baptismal basin in silver was made in 1656 and was initially located in the Holy Trinity Church, the city's second cathedral situated at Christiania Square. The basin was "Altered and Improved" in 1722 in what is known as the Régence style, making it one of the earliest examples in Norway of this transitional style between Baroque and Rococo. The basin was a gift from Governor Gregers Krabbe. Today, when the basin is in use, it is securely fastened to its base with a chain and padlock due to its value, and it is kept in a safe when not in use.
The Main Organ of Oslo Cathedral

Oslo Cathedral received a new organ for its 300th anniversary in 1997, but the baroque facade has been preserved since 1727. The cathedral's first organ, built by Swedish Carl Gustav Luckvitz in 1711, was a gift from General Caspar Hausmann, buried in the cathedral's crypt. However, it was declared "quite useless and unusable" after just ten years.
The Ceiling Paintings in Oslo Cathedral

The 1500 square meter ceiling painting by artist Hugo Lous Mohr is the largest of its kind in Norway and is also unique in a European context. It was painted between 1937 and 1950 and was completed for the last major renovation of Oslo Cathedral. The painting covers the entire ceiling of all four naves of the church.

Blessed are those who are persecuted

Ordinary people in contemporary everyday clothes are blessed on the massive bronze doors at the main entrance of the cathedral. This represented something new at the time when they were completed in 1938.
The Creation Vault in the east nave

The choir vault illustrates the first article of faith. In the background above the altar, Christ emerges in the universe. From his outstretched arms, two seraphim descend towards the earth, one on each side. One bears the cross, the instrument of suffering, and the other bears the dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit’s peace.
The Christ Vault in the north nave

The line of suffering in the Creation Vault transitions into the Christ Vault. In the background, we find the second figure of Christ, the victorious and triumphant Christ. With the cross raised like a sword, he cleaves the darkness and defeats the dragon, which plunges into the abyss.
The Holy Spirit vault in the south nave

From the Creation vault in the east aisle, the line continues into the Holy Spirit vault in the south aisle. In the background, the third figure of Christ is depicted, illuminated by the baptism.
The West Vault above the gallery

This vault stands out from the other three vaults. Here, Mohr has painted the four evangelists of the New Testament and four prophets of the Old Testament.
