About the church in Meldal
Meldal church from 1651 burned to the ground 16th of June 1981.
A new church was built on the site of the old and was completed in 1988.
After a heated discussion in the community whether the church was to be a modern church or a copy of the old one, it was decided to build a replica.
The new Meldal church, designed by John Mosand, Trondheim, was how the majority in the village wanted it, a historicizing church with many similarities to the old church.
The worship Room is the foundation of the building and determines its main form. Such churches have been built up over the centuries. All other rooms are therefore secondary rooms.
Heading into the worship room one enters through the church porch. Here hang several objects which also graced this room before. It has been tried to use as much of that which was salvaged from the old church. As the name says, “armory”, one would here leave their weapons in there before attending the service . Now, we have no weapons, but the purpose still gives meaning. In the church we seek peace with God through Christ and strive for peace and reconciliation with each other.
When entering the church it is the unique shapes and colors of the Baroque which reveals themselves. The altarpiece is an eye catcher. It is a stunning piece of artwork. The pulpit is also a beautiful sight to see. Everything must serve dual purpose. To give beauty and to lift up ones spirit. Pictures, shapes, compositions, everything shall preach about aspects of the Christian gospel. The church shall be an image of the kingdom and show what is to come.
The church shall not only be an encouragement to the eye but also the ear. The splendid Frobenius organ along with excellent acoustics, have already laid the basis for many fine services and concerts.
The sacristy is shaped like a chapel. Here, also the confessional and altar from the old vestry have been placed. The room is suitable for preparation for the priest before the service, and for simple weddings. Another preparation room with character and solemnity is the baptism sacristy. This is not accidental. Baptism is a sacred act where a little person becomes a child of God. This certainly also deserves a beautiful entrance.
